HELEN MEDLYN JOINS SISTER ACT

Producers of SISTER ACT, THE MUSICAL -- inspired by the Whoopi Goldberg smash-hit movie -- today announce that one of New Zealand’s most popular singer and actresses, Helen Medlyn, will play Mother Superior in the production at Auckland’s ASB Waterfront Theatre this November.

A respected performer of opera, jazz, straight theatre, oratorio, cabaret, lieder and music theatre, Medlyn joins an outstanding cast for this “feel-amazing” musical comedy that features all new original music by TONY and 8-time Oscar winner Alan Menken (Beauty And The Beast, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin).

As Mother Superior, Medlyn plays a pivotal role in the hilarious story of Deloris Van Cartier, a wannabe diva whose life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a crime and the cops hide her in the last place anyone would think to look- a convent!

Under the suspicious watch of the Mother Superior, using her unique disco moves and singing talent to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church and community but in doing so, blows her cover. Soon, the gang is giving chase only to find them up against Deloris and the power of her newly found sisterhood.

Medlyn has enjoyed her own heavenly life on stage, with highlights including her unforgettable portrayal of Joy Gresham in the William Nicholson play, Shadowlands; her haunting, debauched Beggar Woman in Sweeney Todd and her harridan-with-a-heart Katisha in The Mikado; her warm-hearted Mother Superior in The Sound of Music; her Claudia Cardinale-like Maddalena in Rigoletto for Opera Australia, NZO; her scary, but, oh, so funny Wicked Witch of the West in the musical The Wizard of Oz; her vivid and varied voice characterisations as narrator of Jenny McLeod’s The Emperor and the Nightingale; her poignantly played Fraulein Schneider in Cabaret and her riotous Margaret Lord in High Society.

“We are thrilled that Helen has agreed to be part of this cast,” says director David Adkins. “Her experience and talent is heavenly. Audiences are in for a real treat.”

SISTER ACT, THE MUSICAL has all the glamour and energy that you should expect from a Broadway blockbuster – thrilling scenery, gorgeous costumes, snappy one-liners and heart-pumping dance numbers.

Filled with powerful gospel music, outrageous dancing and a truly moving story, SISTER ACT, THE MUSICAL will leave audiences breathless. A sparkling tribute to the universal power of friendship, SISTER ACT, THE MUSICAL is reason to REJOICE!
