Join Stellar Line-Up For The Big Screen Symposium 2017

21 September, 2017 -- Luke Davies, the BAFTA-winning screenwriter of LION, David Michôd, acclaimed writer/director of the Oscar®-winning feature ANIMAL KINGDOM,Midge Sanford, pioneering producer of DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN, Kerry Barden, Casting Director of more than 250 productions including 13 REASONS WHY,SPOTLIGHT, THE HELP and AUGUST OSAGE COUNTY and Neil Cross, the Emmy-nominated creator of LUTHER join the stellar line-up of speakers confirmed for this year’sBIG SCREEN SYMPOSIUM.

The event, which takes place in Auckland on September 30 and October 1, brings the screen industry of Aotearoa New Zealand together for debate, discussion, information and inspiration.

The BIG SCREEN SYMPOSIUM is the biggest annual screen industry event in New Zealand. Director of the Big Screen Symposium Esther Cahill-Chiaroni is delighted with this year’s line-up: “It is truly exciting to bring the film and television makers of New Zealand together, and to share ideas and perspectives with our international speakers. Past experience has shown us the collegial connections that are made at the Symposium last well past the two days.”

The programme for BIG SCREEN SYMPOSIUM 2017 is built around the theme ‘Authenticity and Pretence’, and delegates will be immersed in two intensive days of conversations, workshops, panel discussions and case studies.

The 2017 BIG SCREEN SYMPOSIUM 2017 programme includes sessions with:

Luke Davies - BAFTA-winning screenwriter whose credits include the 2016 feature filmLION and the acclaimed Australian feature film CANDY (starring Heath Ledger and Abbie Cornish), adapted from his novel of the same name. Luke will deliver a masterclass on adapting for the screen;

David Michôd - writer/director of the gritty Oscar-winning feature ANIMAL KINGDOM and co-writer and director of THE ROVER. David will delve into the craft of directing and his journey to co-writing and directing big budget Brad Pitt-led Netflix drama WAR MACHINE;

Pioneering producer Midge Sanford (DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN, RIVER’S EDGE) will talk about what it takes to produce great indie films;

Neil Cross, acclaimed author and the award-winning creator of Idris Elba’s LUTHER, will discuss crafting authentic characters and stories;

Goalpost Pictures partner and Australian film and television Producer Kylie du Fresne(THE SAPPHIRES, CLEVERMAN) and Foxtel’s Head of Drama Penny Win(WENTWORTH) join the #BigScreen17 drama panel which will shine a spotlight on episodic drama with a look at what co-production opportunities exist across the ditch for New Zealand television makers;

Writer/director So Yong Kim’s films include the award-winning IN BETWEEN DAYS(2006), critically acclaimed TREELESS MOUNTAIN (2008), FOR ELLEN (2012) andLOVESONG (2017). Kim has also recently directed for television, including episodes ofTRANSPARENT, AMERICAN CRIME, THE GOOD FIGHT and ROOM 104. Join her for a directing masterclass;

A large Wellington contingent join the line-up this year, with local feature films ONE THOUSAND ROPES and THE CHANGEOVER will be put under the microscope in Case Study sessions featuring key behind-the-scenes creative personnel.

Other speakers at #BigScreen17 include: United Talent Artists agent Bec Smith who will discuss independent film financing and packaging and distribution guru Peter Broderickwho will reveal new paths in global film distribution; leading US casting director Kerry Barden who joins #BigScreen17 hot on the heels of the Equity Foundation’s Casting Hothouse, creator and performer Jess Hansell aka Coco Solid (ONLY IN AOTEAROA), writer/director Michael Bennett (THE CONFESSIONS OF PRISONER T, MATARIKI,OUTRAGEOUS FORTUNE) and acclaimed New Zealand documentary-maker Annie Goldson (KIM DOTCOM: CAUGHT IN THE WEB, BROTHER NUMBER ONE).
