Thousands Raised for Kids Born with Broken Hearts

A massive $45,000 has been raised for children born with heart conditions at the weekend’s Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge.

Children from as young as two years old, took part in the annual cycle race which attracted more than 6000 riders across a range of disciplines… 200 children took part in the Kid’s Heart Ride.

One of the oldest participants and Heart Kids supporter, Colin Anderson (70), clocked up his 94th circumnavigation of the great lake competing in the Maxi Enduro race (640km).

The veteran cyclist who has taken part in the cycle challenge for 30 years, has always been a huge supporter of Heart Kids, but last year the event took on extra significance when his own great grandson was born with a heart defect.

“Logan has had one major surgery and is doing well. But it’s given me even more reason to raise money for Heart Kids and support the amazing work they do,” says Colin.

Heart Kids cycle ambassador, 13-year-old Tim Kowalewski, rode in his 7th cycle challenge this year and finished the 40km race 10 minutes faster than last year. And in a wonderful gesture by Colin Anderson, Tim was gifted Colin’s pink enduro cycle cap.

“I was so impressed by Tim’s story, and the hurdles he’s had to overcome in life, I wanted to show him how inspiring he is to so many people,” explains Colin.

Heart Kids has been the official charity of the Lake Taupo Challenge for 15 years, raising more than $700,000 for children born with congenital heart defects.

Heart Kids Chief Executive, Rob Lutter says the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge is one of the major events on the Heart Kids fundraising calendar. “We are always overwhelmed by the support we receive from people around the country who fundraise and take part in the event. This year is no exception.”

12 babies are born every week in New Zealand with a heart defect. Heart Kids is a not-for-profit organisation which provides support services to kids, teens, adults living with a childhood heart condition and their families. It is the only organisation in NZ dedicated to supporting heart kids through life.
