NZ-made virtual reality cricket game goes global

Last week VersoVR’s virtual reality cricket simulator, Cricket Club, was released on the global gaming platform Steam and is now selling in a broad range of countries, including traditionally non-cricketing nations.

“We’re completely blown away by the enthusiasm from cricket fans around the world,” says Daniel Crayford from VersoVR.

“This project began as a labour of love - we wanted to make a cricket game for ourselves to play, and it just got bigger. We started testing it with some big-hitting international players, which was a real thrill, and their input in making it more realistic was invaluable. When you put on that headset on and step up to the crease, it’s like you’re really there - the pulse certainly cranks up.”

With Cricket Club VR players can attack, defend, and swing their way to glory in front of a packed crowd at Wellington’s Basin Reserve. Skills are pushed to the limit as players face up to a challenging range of bowlers; from slow and steady to fast and frightening.

“We’ve been demoing the game at the New Zealand Cricket Museum during tests and one-dayers over the summer, and what really surprised us was the social aspect of the game – it’s almost as much fun to watch as it is to play. And it does get quite competitive.”

Realistic physics, immersive sound, and fluid animation puts players in the middle of the action, while the gentle humour, and obvious love of the game deliver an unequalled VR cricket experience.

“We’ve had thousands of people play Cricket Club in its development stage, and they all say the same thing: when can I get it?

And yes, there is a streaker.
