Naked Girls Reading: The Pride Edition

A Scandalous, Queer & Completely Nude Literary Event Comes to WGTN
Naked Girls Reading: The Pride Edition promises to be an unmissable celebration of the naked bodies, good storytelling and, of course, women. It runs at The Fringe Bar for one night only - Saturday February 17th, 8pm, in association with The Wellington Pride Festival.

They’re here, they’re queer, they’re naked. Get ready to f*ck the cis-tem, the patriarchy and the heteronormative power structures that be, one piece of literature at a time. Gird your loins - it's Naked Girls Reading: The Pride Edition! This innovative and outrageous cabaret show is exactly what it sounds like - completely naked queer people reading literature aloud. It features unclad talent from all across New Zealand and a lively selection of LGBTQIA+ literature sure to leave you laughing, provoked and full of pride.

The production’s star-studded cast features Jean Puawananga Sergent, sociologist and theatre practitioner, Sam Douglas, a local queer and vegan activist, and Adam David Rohe (AUCKLAND), a literature nerd and actor. Rohe, as a transgender man, will be the first naked boy reading in a New Zealand line-up. These clever queers have picked their favourite bits of iconic rainbow literature to recite for you. Expect excerpts of everything LGBTQIA - from Judith Butler to The Topp Twins, from coming out stories to Kate Bornstein, raunchy lesbian smut to some handy anal sex tips. They’ll be sauntering through the literary landscape of all things camp in an evening.

‘If anything, it’s a comedy show,’ says MC and producer Hugo Grrrl. ‘Each edition we bring together a group of kick-ass viciously funny, whip-smart women and get them to read and talk about stories they’re passionate about. It’s a recipe for wonderful disaster.’
‘People often come into it thinking it’s going to be a very glamorous and traditionally sexy affair, and they’re not wrong. But we’re also going to yell about feminism and our feelings for ninety minutes. The show really isn’t about nudity or titillation at all. It’s about normalising and desexualising the naked female form and celebrating bodies and their stories.’

Hugo Grrrl, the alter-ego of comedy and cabaret producer Gen Fowler, is the creator of the project and also produces a wide variety of other projects in Wellington and beyond including The Rocky Horror Drag Show and The Wellington Pun Battle. Grrrl is also reigning national drag king champion (‘Yes, there is such a thing!’ laughs Fowler) and was recently awarded Best Producer in The Wellington Comedy Awards 2017.

Naked Girls Reading: The Pride Edition runs for one night only at 8pm at The Fringe Bar (Saturday 17th of January). The show runs bi-monthly throughout the year and future themes include Motherhood, Food and The Occult. Pre-sale tickets are just $20 and available through Eventfinder.co.nz. For more information please see our Facebook event or contact Hugo Grrrl at contact@hugogrrrl.com or 022 103 2809.
