Just a second or three: Whose win is it?


The 2012 World champion, Whangamomona farmer, Scots international and 2012 World champion, produced the second best quality points to claim another in a sequence of second placings since winning at Tauranga last month, a final for which Smith did not qualify and which was the only time he has been beaten in an Open competition in New Zealand in more than a year.

Kirkpatrick had to settle for third and fourth was Te Kuiti veteran Digger Balme, who had been second to finish, in 17min 20.94sec.

Woodville shearer Tegwyn Bradley completed a Friday-Saturday double by adding the Senior title to that he won at the Dannevirke A and P Show 24 hours earlier, while former World woolhandling champion Sheree Alabaster, of Taihape, also made it a second win in two days over 2010 World teams title teammate Keryn Herbert, of Te Kuiti.

Mid-40s Hawke’s Bay farmer Mark Ferguson had his first win since a 2017 Golden Shears and New Zealand championships Junior double by winning today’s North Island Intermediate championship final, in which overseas shearers were second, third and fourth.

Northern Wairarapa shearer Jonathon Painter won another Junior shearing title, and Logan Kamura, who won the open woolhandling final at Taihape last Saturday, today won the Novice shearing final.

Senior shearing runner-up Ricci Stevens, of Napier, won the Senior woolhandling final, and the Junior woolhandling title went to schoolboy Cortez Ostler,of Marton.
