Impulse Theatre- Strangers

Impulse Theatre- Strangers- Media Release

Strangers by Impulse Theatre is a unique unscripted comedy-drama which has received rave reviews in Christchurch and comes to Dunedin for the first time as part of Dunedin Fringe with shows 11-14 March.

Impulse Theatre was founded in 2015 by veteran improviser, Jonathan Briden. His aim was to bring a new style of theatrical improvisation to Christchurch audiences, and to give actors more opportunities to work in a mindful, emotionally-connected way. After many years performing, teaching, and directing in Sydney and around the world, Jonathan has returned to his homeland with a knowledge of improvisation that is as broad as it is deep.

In the 90’s, Jonathan was a major part of the Sydney improv scene, and a Theatresports champion, but he had become increasingly interested in the possibilities of the various styles of long-form improvisation. Working with teachers from the US and Europe, he discovered a whole new world of improvisation in which the actors connected and reacted on a more emotional, intimate level, creating characters that were more real, more grounded, more uniquely human.

This deeper theatrical approach to improvisation is much more satisfying for performers and audience alike. It creates a broad blend of both drama and comedy, with the comedy coming from relatable characters and situations, rather than the clever one-liners and absurdity that are the basis of short-form improvisation.

In Christchurch, Jonathan quickly found a wonderful group of like-minded artists, keen to try this different approach, and Impulse Theatre was born. Much of the early training fell to Jonathan alone, but in his time overseas he had made personal connections with many of the world’s best teachers of improvisation. He soon tempted them to come to Christchurch, and in just a few years has brought in David Razowsky (LA), Bobbi Block (Philadelphia), Pauline Calmé (Paris), and Steve Jarand (Calgary). In 2018, the learning journey continues with Gary Schwartz (Washington) as well as return visits from Pauline Calmé and David Razowsky.

Audience reviews

Strangers was a rare and delightful improv experience. Watching 6 strangers discover new friends, relationships and themselves is a quirky and charming form to watch. It was like a romcom, co-directed by Ryan Reynolds and Alfred Hitchcock. I can't wait to go again!!

Spectacularly funny and super awkward. "Strangers" brings the best of original kiwi improv to the masses. What a cool show! The Audience was laughing from start to finish! Such a good time. So glad I spent my Friday night at strangers.

Fantastic show, by turns hilarious and thought-provoking. Who knew Christchurch had such talent?
A really funny, clever and inventive show! Loved it.
A very amusing and fast paced performance. I've been twice and had two completely different experiences
