International comedian JAMES SMITH - Pleasure Enthusiast

International comedian JAMES SMITH chosen as special guest on US Superstar

Chris Rock’s tour to debut his smash hit solo show Pleasure Enthusiast in May

Media Release: Wednesday, March 14: Australian and internationally renowned comedian James Smith was chosen as a special guest on US comedy giant Chris Rock’s July 2017 Total Black Out Tour of Australia and New Zealand. Smith was personally selected by the two-time Oscar host himself and earned rave reviews for his set.

Now James Smith presents his debut New Zealand show Pleasure Enthusiast this May for one night only at SKYCITY Theatre on Saturday, May 5.

Smith has spent much of his comedy career in New York and is one of only four Australian comedians ever to perform on the US TV show CONAN.

Other TV credits include; HBO’s Flight of the Conchords, Just For Laughs Montreal, Live At Gotham, and Just For Laughs Australia to name a few.

He’s written jokes for the Comedy Central Roast of Justin Bieber and Rob Lowe, which were published by People Magazine. Smith was also featured in Time Magazine for his political material during the Obama administration.

He is the only Australian comedian ever to have been a regular performer at the world-renowned Comedy Cellar in New York City. He was also invited to perform in the New York Comedy Festival at the Town Hall.

No stranger to working with celebrities, Smith has opened for stars such as Louie CK, John Mayer, Jim Gaffigan, Bob Saget, Roast Master Jeffrey Ross and Arj Barker. Movie Star Gerard Butler personally hired Smith to roast him for his Birthday bash in NYC. Smith was also asked to perform at a private function for former New York Mayor Rudi Giuliani.

Smith, a former Lawyer and Australasian Public Speaking Champion, who was twice selected to compete at the World Debating Championships at Princeton University, will make his debut at the New Zealand International Comedy Festival this year with his smash hit show Pleasure Enthusiast.

Joseph Cederwall Review: NZSO Plays Zappa

The first of the NZSO’s Shed Series concerts at the more informal and intimate space of Wellington's Shed 6 last Friday night featured music composed by, or with a connection to Frank Zappa. Zappa, a psychedelic rock legend, activist and popular culture figure and all round colourful character, was an excellent choice for the concert’s theme of innovation. More>>

Scoop Review of Books: Martin Edmonds' The Expatriates

This book is an extension of, and tribute to, the life’s work of James McNeish. Without sacrificing any degree of authorial independence, the result is gracefully written, handsomely produced, and likely to propagate many further works of its kind. More>>

Joe Cederwall Review: WOMAD 2018 - Harmony of Difference (part 1)

A friend described WOMAD as his “favourite white middle class celebration of diversity.” There is certainly an echo of truth to this as the crowd is still largely white and middle class, but this WOMAD for me represented that a better world is possible ... More>>

Harmony of Difference (part 2)

Top international world music artists seldom make it down to this neck of the woods, so for those of us into this sort of thing WOMAD is certainly a welcome addition to the cultural calendar. Howard Davis Review: A Bigger Splash - Te Papa Celebrates Twenty Years

Considering the available resources, this is a decidedly hit-and-miss affair, mainly due to some highly questionable curatorial decisions. In their overweening wish to "push boundaries," Charlotte Davy and Megan Tamati-Quennell have made a number of serious miscalculations by ignoring a basic rule - keep it simple. More>>
