Police vs Fire rugby game

Friendly rivalry of ANZACs to be reflected in Police vs Fire rugby game

Police and Fire and Emergency NZ will battle out their friendly emergency services rivalry on the field in a rugby showdown this ANZAC Day.

The game is being held at College Rifles Rugby Grounds in Remuera, Auckland on Wednesday 25 April.

Kick-off is at 2:45pm.

The New Zealand Police and Fire and Emergency NZ enjoy a proud history of working with each other on a regular basis in local and national events.

This game, whilst allowing some friendly rivalry, gives the two services the opportunity to go head to head in a physical game that we are sure the spectators will enjoy.

Team manager Senior Sergeant Kerei Gray from Christchurch Police says events like the Christchurch and Kaikoura earthquakes and the Port Hills fires demonstrates how well the Police and Fire can work together to ensure the public receive a quality response.

“But that’s being put aside for this rugby game, we won’t be best buddies today, it’s time for our rivalry to shine through.

The New Zealand Police rugby team will be out to prove we’re the better side.”

The NZ Police team has been selected following the Police winter games held in Rotorua in 2017 and includes players from all over the country.

Former Super rugby representatives Tone Kopelani and Roger Dustow are in the team, along with a number of regional rugby representatives and club rugby players.

“This game makes up part of our preparation for the Police Rugby World Cup in Hong Kong in 2019,” says Mr Gray.

“It’s going to be some quality rugby, so make sure you come along to check it out and be part of the action.”
