Corey Baker Helps Aspiring Kiwi Dancers

New Zealand choreographer Corey Baker celebrates his birthday in Christchurch on June 6th, with the launch of a new scholarship to support aspiring Kiwi dancers.

Coreys recent film project in Antarctica - The First Dance focused international attention on climate change with the innovative use of dance and environment. While back in New Zealand, over the past month, Coreys been choreographing a world premier for the Royal New Zealand Ballets Dancing with Mozart season.

The acclaimed choreographer now lives in U.K. and calls the world his stage, but still remembers the stress of trying to make ends meet as a young dancer. “I want to make it easier for others facing financial hardship to fulfil their potential as dancers”.

Growing up in the Christchurch suburb of Hornby, Corey struggled financially, “I came from a poor family where there was simply no spare money for dance lessons or ballet shoes.”

The Corey Baker Dream Scholarship will be launched at a fundraising event hosted by Corey at the Coca Art Gallery in Christchurch, and supported by the Ballet Foundation of New Zealand.

Corey says the Scholarship is a chance for business and the community to show their support for the next generation of Kiwi dancers”.

Corey recently choreographed a unique performance in Antarctica with Royal New Zealand Ballet dancer, Madeleine Graham. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_sq59Ajwv4&t=3s
