The Wellington Feminist Poetry Club launches in Wellington

June 18th, 2018

An exciting new spoken word poetry show makes its debut this Friday June 22nd at The Fringe Bar. Starring some of the country's most politically minded literary creatives, the show promises to be a challenging and inspiring evening of local talent.

Join the Wellington Feminist Poetry Club this month as the nerdiest kids in school deliver you a whip-smart and biting night of spoken word poetry. The capital’s sharpest literary students will be taking the podium with moving, lyrical and even comedic stories of modern girlhood, queer resistance or anything they damn well please. The curriculum is enticing, the reading list is moreish and the homework, nonexistent. It’s the most entertaining extracurricular activity about.

The event will be headlined by extremely accomplished local writer Nalini Singh. Singh has been writing poetry since age 9, been published nationally and internationally and was the 2010 NZPS International Poetry Competition winner and 2014 Auckland University Poetry Slam Champion.

The Club is scheduled to run monthly on Thursdays after its June launch. Each show boasts a fresh line-up of readers and headline talent. Including Charlotte Austin, Freya Daly Sadgrove, Courtney Rose Brown, Tarns Hood and Mary Rainsford. The projects aims to maintain a powerful yet celebratory feminist tone and also welcomes all members regardless of gender identity.

Each month, the event is also skillfully hosted by some Wellingtons funniest female comics, including Lucy Forrestal (NZ Comedy Festival Best Wellington Debut 2018) and Gabby Anderson (National Raw Comedy Quest Champion 2018).

The Fringe Bar will be hosting the Wellington Feminist Poetry Club monthly in 2018. Show dates are June 22nd, July 26th, August 16th, Sept 27th, Oct 18th and Nov 29th. The launch showcase is just $10. Following shows even lower at $5. Door sales only.
