Showquest Nelson Results
Waimea College took out the Nelson Showquest at
the Trafalgar Centre on Tuesday in the second regional event
of New Zealand’s new music, dance and drama showcase for
schools.
Local teens captured the spirit of the event in themes that are important to them, such as war, body image, and ocean pollution. The event in Nelson was a collaboration with local group Break Out, with the support of the Nelson City Council.
The winning team of students from Waimea College chose the theme of Distorted Images for their performance piece. Student Co-Captain Jordana Arnold for the Waimea team said it felt fantastic to be on stage.
“We were all quite nervous beforehand but we were also excited, and once we got up there it was a great feeling,” said the 17-year-old student, “We wanted to get across the message that you don’t have to change yourself to fit in, just be yourself and express yourself.“
Teams in the competitive section were judged overall on their performance, soundtrack, costuming, chorography, and theme. Judge, Michael Knapp was impressed by the talent: “I can see that going around the country if we picked the greatest hits from each location as we go we would have a world class show.”,

Showquest is being staged in Northland,
Dunedin, Christchurch, Nelson, Wellington, Hawkes Bay,
Rotorua, Hamilton, New Plymouth and Auckland. A national
online final will name the top entry nationwide in
September.
Rockquest Promotions, which has 30 years of success with the country’s only live, nationwide school music contest, won the contract from the Ministry of Education earlier this year for a dance and music performance event for schools.
Showquest lines up with the curriculum and with NCEA standards across several subject areas, inspiring students to put what they’ve learnt into practice in a professional stage setting, with a live audience.
