SPCA celebrates 10 years of cupcakes

SPCA celebrates 10 years of cupcakes to support animal welfare

23 July 2018: SPCA is encouraging Kiwis across the country to follow their sweet tooth into the kitchen as they celebrate a decade since the launch of their annual fundraiser: Cupcake Day.

Nearly half a million animals have been helped since the first Cupcake Day was held and the need for Kiwis to get involved, by baking and buying cupcakes, is as great as ever.

Each year, the SPCA offers love, care and shelter to over 45,000 animals. Since 2009, SPCA has raised more than $2.3 million for our furry friends through Cupcake Day alone, with all proceeds going towards protecting these abused, neglected, injured and abandoned animals.

2018’s sweetest fundraising event of the year will be held on Monday 6 August. Kiwis who are keen to get involved can register online and host a party, organise a bake sale, or encourage their workplace to make cupcakes together and raise money to help vulnerable animals.

SPCA’s CEO, Andrea Midgen, says Cupcake Day’s 10th anniversary carries a serious message.

“Our animals don’t have a voice to defend themselves, and therefore it’s our duty to do all that we can to protect them. The aim of Cupcake Day is to ensure supporters have a little fun, whilst knowing that their fundraising is going to a good cause.”

The national fundraiser has grown in popularity each year and is renowned for its fun, community-driven approach recruiting people of all ages to get involved and raise money for a great cause.

“Without the help of the public we wouldn’t be able to provide shelter, care and vet treatment for the 45,000 animals that come through our doors each year. To everyone who will bake or buy cupcakes in the next two weeks, we want to say thank you. As well as saving lives, your donations will be used to care for the animals in our shelters as they wait to find their forever home.” Midgen adds.

SPCA aims to raise $320,000 through Cupcake Day sales this year. All funds donated will be used to directly help rescue, rehabilitate and rehome animals.

How to take part:

It’s easy to get involved in SPCA’s 10th annual Cupcake Day. You can register to bake and sell as an individual, team or school at https://www.spcacupcakeday.co.nz/

After registering, you’ll receive plenty of ideas, recipes, inspiration and tips to make your event special. The SPCA encourages Cupcake Day participants to use SPCA Blue Tick approved eggs in their baking. Remember to share photos of your mouth-watering creations on the SPCA’s Facebook page at @RoyalNZSPCA, on Instagram at @spcanz and via Twitter using the hashtag #SPCACupcakeDay

For the second year, The Coffee Club is supporting the SPCA as Cupcake Day’s major sponsor. In 2017 they raised $30,000 and they aim to do the same again this year by selling cupcakes in their stores nationwide.
