NZTrio presents Braid to mark women’s suffrage

NZTRIO COMMEMORATES 125TH ANNIVERSARY OF NZ WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE WITH 'BRAID'

NZTrio presents
BRAID
CLEMENT • MENDELSSOHN • KATS-CHERNIN • KELLY • SCHUMANN
Performed by Ashley Brown (cello) with guest musicians Benjamin Baker (violin) and Stephen De Pledge (piano)

NZTrio is delighted to celebrate an all-female cast of composers as New Zealand marks the 125th anniversary of women’s suffrage this year. These remarkable women are represented in this powerful tribute by a perfect tangle of traits - enigma in the Clement (NZ), protective embrace in the Kelly (NZ), enduring strength in the Kats-Chernin (AUS), compassion in the Schumann (GER) and emotional wisdom in the Mendelssohn (GER).

Braid will make its way to Wellington for an extra show on Wednesday Sept 26 at City Gallery Wellington, Civic Square, 101 Wakefield St at 7pm.

NZTrio continues to share its 2018 programme with audiences in Auckland, Wellington and around the country, through a fine selection of concerts that embrace new commissions, female composers and thrilling explorations of the classical canon in September and November.

For the 2018 programme deep connections are woven through each concert and across the series. Familial, romantic, and collegial relationships are revealed among the Mendelssohns, the Schumanns, and Brahms. Stylistic nuances across the decades appear among Kiwi composers ¬– Buchanan, Kelly, and Oram, and Aussies Greenbaum, Kats-Chernin, and Hindson – allowing for comparisons of styles from either side of the Tasman. The concerts open with a sense of strength and fragility referenced by Clement and Glass, and there’s a celebration of New Zealand’s suffragettes in the September programme of all female composers.
