Kiwi musicians going forward and giving back

Kiwi musicians going forward and giving back

Nestled between a car repair shop and a storage unit in Mount Roskill stands a humble shed where 15 or so kids come together every week to learn from and be inspired by some of New Zealand's high achieving musicians. Established in 2015, the Central Music Academy is a non-profit organisation run entirely by volunteers who teach music and provide musical instruments to underprivileged youth for free.

While the Academy itself is small, it plays an enormous role in the community. With private music tuition in Auckland typically costing upwards of $50 an hour, many children in the Mount Roskill community mightn't have access to music lessons and musical instruments were it not for the Academy. Says Central Music Academy Co-Founder Linda Filimoehala: "We believe it's fundamentally important every child have access to musical instruments and music lessons. Our purpose is not only to give all children the opportunity to learn music, but also to encourage them to take their interest in music seriously, like our hard-working volunteers".

Academy volunteer and rising soprano, Leila Alexander explains: "One of the best things about NZ is that we band together to support each other. The Academy is a great example of that, as well as what can be achieved even with limited resources". Ms Alexander has organised a fundraiser concert for the Academy and her operatic studies. Featuring herself, Lexus Songquest Finalist, Tavis Gravatt, and musical theatre singer, Rory Nolan, the concert will take place on 29 August at 6 PM in the Gus Fisher Gallery on Shortland Street. It is an excellent opportunity for the public to get behind talented Kiwi musicians and their invaluable philanthropic work in the community.
