Screenwriting Workshop Inspires Kiwis to Take Stories to Scr

Ever wanted to get a handle on writing for the big screen?

The Beginner’s Guide to Screenwriting workshop (15 & 16th Sept) is a fast and furious introduction to the art and craft of screenwriting.

The popular weekend workshop has been running regularly in NZ for 6 years and has helped pave the way for dozens of Kiwi writers to get their stories on screen – 3 films in the recent International Film Festival were penned by previous participants and workshop facilitator/screenwriter Kathryn Burnett, says she knows that a significant number of her previous students have had work produced.

She says getting some professional guidance early on can be instrumental in setting people off in the right direction.

“It used to be that everyone had a novel in them – now everyone has a film idea. People love the idea of writing a film but don’t realise that screenplays have a distinct form and language. It’s not as simple as just writing a bunch of dialogue.”

Burnett created the Beginner’s Guide to Screenwriting Workshop in 2012 to share her comprehensive knowledge gleaned over 20 years as a professional screenwriter.

“There are thousands of blogs and books on screenwriting in the world but many of them don’t offer the nuts and bolts info about where you start, how to build a story for screen, whether an idea is right for cinema and what to expect when you’ve finished writing. Participants often tell me how they love being able to ask their burning questions in person.”
