21 international, local street artists transform Tairāwhiti

Tairāwhiti, Aotearoa: MEDIA RELEASE, September 27, 2018

21 international and local street artists ready to transform Tairāwhiti

PangeaSeed Foundation, in partnership with the Tairāwhiti Environment Centre are excited to announce the extraordinary line-up of artists who are set to transform Gisborne and Uawa/Tolaga Bay as part of the festival Sea Walls: Artists for Oceans, Tairāwhiti, 5-15 October 2018.

Artists from Switzerland, South Africa, USA, Mexico, Hawaii and Australia will join local talent to paint large-scale murals on walls in Gisborne’s centre and Uawa/Tolaga Bay. (Please refer to the attached artist line up)

PangeaSeed Foundation’s Tairāwhiti coordinator Kelly Spencer says the town and region will be transformed by the diverse and thought-provoking public artworks that explore and expose critical ocean issues such as overfishing, plastics and pollution, global climate change, and habitat loss.

“We are really looking forward to bringing this festival to the people of Tairāwhiti who already have a deep and personal relationship with the ocean, and to explore and reflect the concept of being a kaitiaki (guardian) of the sea,” she said.

Most of the artists will paint murals on Gisborne’s walls between October 5th to 15th. Please see the attached map for details about wall locations, and artists. A handful of artists will paint murals in Uawa/Tolaga Bay on October 16th to 18th.

The PangeaSeed Foundation’s art program is a mobile global program, where artists volunteer their time and talent to the cause. Since 2014, PangeaSeed has created over 300 murals in 12 countries around the world.

Hawaii-based PangeaSeed Foundation founder Tré Packard says the organisation has a special affinity with Aotearoa/New Zealand.

“Many of our artists who have been with us since inception are from Aotearoa New Zealand, and have key roles in PangeaSeed. In 2016, we held Aotearoa’s first SeaWalls in Napier and then again in 2017, and now the town has over 50 murals.

We are thrilled and honoured to be bringing the festival further north to the people of Tairāwhiti,” he said.

The festival begins Saturday, 3pm on October 6 with a powhiri at Toihoukura School of Maori Visual Arts and Design.

As well as the painting of large-scale public murals, artists will take part in a reef tour of Tatapouri, as part of PangeaSeed’s program of connecting international artists with the local environment.

An exhibition showcasing SeaWalls Tairāwhiti artists as well as local Gisborne artists who focus on environmental issues will be held at Toihoukura. The opening of the exhibition will be held at 6pm, Saturday, October 6th.

The Dome Cinema will host a panel discussion and a film screening of Chasing Coral on Wednesday, October 10th. The cinema opens for drinks at 5pm, then will be followed by the panel discussion at 6pm, and the film screening at 7.15pm
