Racers Edge Gets Behind Epic Red Bull Defiance in Wanaka

High profile sports store Racers Edge is championing New Zealand’s action-packed weekend of adventure in Wanaka.

As the build-up begins for this months Red Bull Defiance, one of the world’s toughest adventure racing events, local Wanaka sports store Racers Edge is gearing up to support over 400 competitors preparing to take on the two-day challenge.

“The Red Bull Defiance is one of those events that defines the essence of what big adventure is in Wanaka and it’s an incredible showcase of what the region has on offer,” says Racers Edge owner Charles Cochrane.

“We are really supportive of the event originating from here and being held each summer. It’s great for the town, attracts a significant number of multisporters and adventure racers to the resort and exposes new people to the epic local terrain.”

Racers Edge Wanaka is dedicated to selling leading New Zealand and international sports brands and equipment.

As the official retail store of Red Bull Defiance, Racers Edge are the ‘go to’ store for a full range of outdoor equipment and clothing that competitors are required to carry as part of the events compulsory gear list.

“It’s not a race you do lightly and the teams generally come well prepared but there is always something competitors need to pick up, and last minute essential items. We stock a wide selection of products including nutritional bars, gels and powders for racing,” says Charles.

“Last year we assisted a number of international competitors who arrived without things like merino base layers, survival blankets and first aid kits which regardless of the weekends weather conditions are compulsory kit to carry throughout the event,” says Charles.

Racers Edge specialist bike maintenance team will provide repair services as required by competitors throughout the event and will assist Giant NZ with pre-race bike checks at the Red Bull Defiance team registration at Edgewater Resort.

“Competitors are welcome to come in, talk to our guys pre-race, find out about local tracks and trails and check out the bike department. We stock Giant, Trek and Whyte bikes and are able to help out where possible with general bike parts, maintenance and accessories.”

Over the weekend, Racers Edge will operate a ‘pop up’ store at the Red Bull Defiance race hub at Edgewater Resort making it convenient to access compulsory gear.

“Planning and team preparation are key for the action ahead as this event combines epic back country mountain biking, kayaking on Lake Wanaka and running across local mountain peaks,” says Charles. “When you string that all together it’s a fast paced, impressive weekend of adventure.”

A new Red Bull Defiance X4 racing category has been introduced for 2019 allowing teams of four to race together. Racers Edge will provide prize vouchers for the top three placed X4 teams.

“We are super excited to have Racers Edge support the new X4 event that has attracted some high profile teams,” says Red Bull Defiance Race Director Bex Law.

“Richie McCaw’s ‘Best Foot Forward NZ’ team is racing this category alongside Wanaka’s ‘Say Yes to Adventure’ team led by Jacqs Manson and the ‘Tiger Adventures’ team led by Trevor Mullens out of Australia. It’s anyone’s guess as to who is ultimately going to take it out.”
