Local dance show to start Fringe off on a high note

Opium Entertainment will kick off NZ Fridge 2019 with a bang when it presents an all-Wellington, all-female cast in Meander On – a modern dance theatre show that celebrates the power of being unashamedly her.

Meander On is produced by Opium Entertainment director, Hannah Dellow, and is written, choreographed, and performed by Wellington artists and top Wellington entertainment industry professionals.

Combining original music, storytelling, and modern dance, the show takes its audience on a journey inspired by the phases of the moon. This modern-day legend follows the story of 11 sisters experiencing the power of the lunar cycle.

"The sisters journey through the cycle and learn that, behind the chaos, a higher purpose guides them on" says co-writer, Manoa Teaiwa.

Artist and co-writer; Te Kahureremoa Taumata performs as Ladyfruit and adorns the show with original melodies and twists. "Meander On is about empowered women, and powerful women create legends" she says.

Meander On is a sequel to Opium Entertainment's first show, Meander, which sold out three performances at Te Auaha in Dixon Street in August 2018. Meander was an uplifting, modern dance interpretation of the process of healing from trauma, and received standing ovations at every performance.

"Meander proved that audiences will come out and support local professional talent. Meander On takes the narrative on to celebrate the power of being women. Meander On will give more Wellingtonians a chance to experience the work of professional choreographers and performers who are based here in Wellington, and show that we don't have to look outside Wellington for world-class entertainment" says Hannah Dellow. "All Wellington performers and artists need is an organising force, and that's what Opium Entertainment is setting out to be.".

"The show is danced-focused, with an added layer of storytelling that gives it structure and progression. It’s more than just a dance show." says Hannah.

Meander On will be performed at Te Auaha in Dixon Street on 1, 2, and 3 March with evening performances on all three nights, and matinees at 2pm on Saturday 2 March and Sunday 3 March.
