New Chairman for Kiwis for Kiwi

1 April 2019

Respected businessman and board director Richard Leggat has been appointed Chairman of Kiwis for kiwi, the national charity that raises funds to support community kiwi conservation projects.

Mr Leggat replaces Sir Rob Fenwick who has retired from the Chairman role he has held for ten years, but will stay on as Patron.

“During my time as Chairman I’ve seen Kiwis for kiwi make massive ground in kiwi conservation. A new strategy has been developed to accelerate kiwi numbers and turn around the 2% decline. We have changed the way we’re doing things to make greater gains. We can now do in 5-10 years what would have taken 50 years or more. Under the continued leadership of Executive Director, Michelle Impey the future is looking good for our national icon,” says Sir Rob.

“The time is now right for me to step down. Having Richard’s highly regarded business acumen and governance experience is extremely positive for the Trust.”

Mr Leggat has extensive governance and leadership experience, particularly with public sector and not for profit entities. He currently holds board roles with Panuku Development Auckland, Warren and Mahoney Ltd, Snowsports NZ, Cycling NZ, Winter Games NZ and he is chair of NZ Cycle Trail Inc. He was previously deputy chairman of Tourism NZ for eight years and on the board of NZ Post for six years.

“I am looking forward to building on the great work that has been achieved in the ongoing battle to save kiwi. Kiwis for kiwi plays a critical role in New Zealand’s conservation future and I am extremely proud to join the passionate team and contribute to this crucial mission.”

Mr Leggat joins Kiwis for kiwi board as chairman on 1 April 2019. Sir Graham Henry remains an Ambassador of the charity.
