Unique Toy Run to put big smiles on small faces

Hundreds of classic cars laden with toys to make their way through the city towards Christchurch Hospital, with a ‘Show and Shine’ raising funds for Ronald McDonald House

Organisers of a unique Classic Car event are expecting at least 200 vehicles to help bring festive cheer to sick children and their families next month.

The annual ‘Six Fellas Toy Run’, to be held on Saturday, December 10, will commence with a ‘Show and Shine’ at CBS Arena, whereby all of the participating cars will be on display to the public for a gold coin donation.

The proceeds will benefit Ronald McDonald House South Island, which provides free accommodation and support to families with children in need of hospital care in Christchurch.

Father Christmas and his helpers will then travel with the cars by convoy through the city, culminating in a toy drop at the Christchurch Hospital Children’s Ward. All of the gifts are being donated by the participating drivers.

It is the second year that the event has been held, and organiser Daryl Morris anticipated this year to be “bigger and better”.

Michael McIlhone, Nursing Director for Women’s and Children’s Health, says that this annual event is greatly appreciated by all the children and their families.

“It adds to the festive cheer for those children who need to be in hospital at this time of the year,” Michael says.

Daryl says they are hoping for over 200 vehicles ranging from classic cars, hot rods and motorcycles.

“The more the merrier. We aim to congregate at the Riverside entrance to Christchurch Hospital where Father Christmas and his helpers will gather the presents off each and every vehicle and then distribute them to the children in the wards.”

The ‘Show and Shine’ will commence at the CBS Arena on Saturday, December 10 from 12:30pm, after which groups of 25 cars will leave for the hospital in five minute intervals from 2pm.

Please note that the public should expect traffic delays in and around Christchurch Hospital and Ronald McDonald House South Island between 2pm and 3pm.
