Mundi – Music from the world stage - national tour 1-19 February 2012

Between them, Mundi’s musicians have travelled through almost every continent on the globe. Inspired by the music of North Africa, the Amazon Basin and beyond, the group’s aim is to use these experiences to create their own unique global sound.

Virtuoso flautist and composer Tamara Smith leads the group, and is supported by master musicians on sax, banjo, bass and world percussion, as well as voice.

Mundi’s debut album, Serendipity was recorded in collaboration with traditional Sri Lankan artists and resulted in a TV special devoted to them. The group’s music has featured on the Air New Zealand play list, on Australia’s ABC network, and showcased on Radio NZ Concert’s ‘Global Sounds’.

Audiences will have the opportunity to experience Mundi on their Arts On Tour NZ national tour beginning in Reefton on 1 February and finishing in the Hokianga on 19 February. (See full itinerary below.)

Musicians

Tamara Smith – Flutes / percussion. Inspired by her travels, Christchurch based Tamara blends her love of the flute with different genres to create her own original sound. She has performed and recorded with The Nomad, Departure Lounge, P-Bass Expressway, Trillion, Solaa, Electric Wire Hustle and Fiona Pears.

Tyson Smith – Guitar / banjo. A founding member of Mundi and brother to Tamara, Wellington based Tyson has recently completed his own album There’s Nothing you Can’t Pretend. He is presently guitarist for Hollie Smith.

Chris Burke – Tenor sax / percussion. While living in Sydney, Chris became involved in Australia’s leading avant-garde music festivals, The Now Now. Since returning to New Zealand in 2003, Chris has lent his talent to artists such as Dave Dobbyn, P-Bass Expressway, Departure Lounge, The Oscillators and Tongue N Groove.

Dougal Canard – Bass. A multi instrumentalist, Dougal has performed with a variety of ensembles around New Zealand and spent five years performing on cruise ships through the Caribbean, the Alaskas and Europe. As well as bass, he plays piano and trumpet and currently also works as a teacher and arranger in Christchurch.

Douglas Brush – Percussion. Hailing from Chicago, Doug received classical percussion training at the American Conservatory of Music and Roosevelt University. In addition to a formal music education, he has studied with percussion masters in Cuba, Spain, India, North and West Africa and other locales.
