Give your kids a memory to treasure – Children’s Commissioner

Hundreds of events planned for children around New Zealand this Sunday (4 March) will celebrate the treasure of childhood.

Children’s Commissioner Dr Russell Wills says Children’s Day is a great way to create life-long happy memories for children.

“Children’s Day is ultimately about having fun. But the day is also about celebrating our children as taonga – our most precious and treasured resource.

“Parents do a fantastic job – one which is tough but rewarding – Children’s Day is a good day to celebrate successes and just relax and have a great time with your children,” he said.

Events around the country range from large community events to smaller events organised by individuals. This year the Phoenix football team is dedicating their Sunday game to Children's Day by opening early and having extra fun activities for the kids.

Porirua is celebrating in style with a free family breakfast from 9.30am – 10.30am, pirate and fairies art and crafts, a parade, a fishing competition, bouncy castle, merry-go-round and sports activities.

Waiheke Island is holding a Teddy Bear’s picnic and MOTAT in Auckland is offering free entry to all children under 16. In Christchurch , among many events planned, there will be a special children’s market day in New Brighton and a Kidz Karnival at Parklands Baptist Community Church .

“So enjoy Children's Day. Make an occasion of it. Do something with your kids - give them a memory to treasure” said the Commissioner.

Children’s Day is a national, non-commercial, event that celebrates children and gives adults a wonderful opportunity to spend time with children in many exciting, fun ways.
