Young People Gather For Race Unity Conference

Young People Gather For Race Unity Conference

March 30, 2012

Eighty young people from around the country will gather in Manurewa tomorrow (Saturday) for the annual Race Unity Conference.

The conference is organised by the New Zealand Baha'i community, with support from NZ Police, the Human Rights Commission and the Office of Ethnic Affairs.

The highlight of the day will be the Race Unity speech award, to be contested by six finalists. The theme this year is "a fair go for all / Rite tahi katou katoa".

Prizes will be awarded by Assistant Police Commissioner Allan Boreham and Race Relations Commissioner Joris de Bres.

The speech final starts at 4:45pm.

The speech competition is held each year in support of Race Relations Day. It is aimed at high school students in years 11, 12 and 13 and speeches must be delivered in either English or Maori.

Earlier in the day, participants will attend a series of workshops covering topics such as police and young people working together for a fair go for all, policing as a career and intercultural dialogue.

The event is being held at the Manukau Bahá’í Community Centre, 16 Rowandale Avenue, Manurewa.
