Kiwis 'Heritage Camp' This Weekend

PRESS RELEASE

Kiwis 'Heritage Camp' This Weekend

Auckland, New Zealand, January 21, 2013 – With the Rugby League World Cup moving more closely into focus, a wider Kiwis training squad will assemble in Sydney this weekend for a two-day training camp.

The Kiwis ‘Heritage camp’ takes place at Manly on January 25-26 with over 30 players invited. The camp is a first summer gathering of the Kiwis as they look to repeat their RLWC success of 2008.

"We see this as the beginning of the campaign," says Tony Kemp, the NZRL General Manager of High Performance. "It's about getting together as a group, outlining plans and structures and setting goals and strategies." The funding of High Performance Sport New Zealand has helped support the camp.

At the camp, the players will be involved in sessions looking at sports science, leadership, mental skills and medical elements. The Kiwis coach Stephen Kearney and his assistant Tony Iro will run game-specific clinics also.

“It’s a big year for rugby league and a big year for the Kiwis,” says Kemp. “The camp allows us to connect with a wider group of players and to set the bar for 2013.”

The Kiwis first match this year is against the Kangaroos in Canberra on April 19. At the RLWC, the Kiwis start their campaign on October 27 against Samoa (in Warrington) and then play France (Avignon, November 1) and Papua New Guinea (Leeds, November 8) in pool play. The tournament has a quarter-final stage before both semi-finals are held at Wembley, in London, on November 23. The RLWC final is at Manchester’s Old Trafford on November 30.
