Youthful line-up announced for Waitangi Day celebrations
Chart-topping kiwi artists Three
Houses Down are set to take to the stage at Toi o
Manukau’s annual Waitangi Day family celebrations at Barry
Curtis Park in Flat Bush.
Three Houses Down will bring their 10-piece power-house band to headline this year’s event. Joining them is a talented youthful line-up that features Maisey Rika featuring Tama Waipara, Aaradhna, Pieter T, Awa & PNC and Sammy J. Local bands will also feature as the event offers a summer mix of hip hop, reggae and soul music.
Toi o Manukau Chairperson, Donna Tupaea-Petero, says that she is excited to present the event and thinks the South Auckland community will celebrate the day with a family friendly line-up of musical acts.
“Our celebrations will again be a great way for our community to commemorate Waitangi Day, our national day. It is great that we can offer a day of live music and children’s entertainment that is free for community.”
Mayor Len Brown says he is proud to support positive community initiatives that add colour to Auckland’s cultural landscape.
“It’s great that Auckland’s largest Waitangi Day celebration is a free, family-friendly event that attracts tens of thousands of Aucklanders every year. If you haven’t experienced it before, head along. Events like this build healthy, positive communities and are exactly what makes Auckland the exciting and vibrant city that we’re proud of.”
The 2013 programme will kick-off with an official civic reception and mihi whakatau (ceremonial welcome), followed by live stage performers form 11am-5pm on the day. A tamariki zone with free children’s rides and activities will also be part of the offering on the day.
One of New Zealand’s most promising musical talents, Aaradhna, accompanied by full band, returns to play songs from her new chart topping album Treble & Reverb which has charted strongly in America. Maisey Rika will perform songs from her number No. 1 NZ album Whitiora with a special guest appearance from Tama Waipara. YouTube sensation Sammy J travels from Melbourne to join the line-up with his acoustic style sure to win over new fans.
The event is the Auckland region’s largest Waitangi Day celebration with over 40,000 expected to attend.
