Script to Screen and the NZ Film Commission present three open seminars and panel discussions as part of the First Feature Lab. Take a closer look at development and co-writing with Keith Thompson; hear Alison Maclean talk about the transition from short film to features; and delve into creative producing with Philippa Campbell.

COLLABORATION AND DEVELOPMENT WITH KEITH THOMPSON
MONDAY APRIL 15, 10am-12pm

A follow up to Keith Thompson’s session at the Big Screen Symposium last year. Keith will discuss the process of co-writing versus script editing and how writing in collaboration can strengthen the development process.
Screenwriter Keith Thompson is a ten-time Australian Writer’s Guild AWGIE Award winner. His recent film adaptation The Sapphires, co-written by Tony Briggs, was an Official Selection at Cannes 2012 and has recently been released by the Weinstein Company. The film won 11 awards at the 2013 Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Awards (AACTA) including Best Film and Best Adapted Screenplay.

FROM SHORT FILMS TO FEATURES AND BEYOND WITH ALISON MACLEAN
TUESDAY APRIL 16, 10am-12pm

Alison Maclean discusses the transition from short films to features, the advantages of the short film medium, and what elements make a story best suited to which medium. As a director with extensive international experience she will delve into the different demands of working around the world in both film and television.
Canadian-born to New Zealand parents, writer and director Alison Maclean helmed one of the most successful NZ Film Commission funded short films of all time, Kitchen Sink, which debuted at Cannes and won eight international awards. A graduate of Elam School of Fine Arts, she has directed feature films Crush (which she also wrote) andJesus’ Son (US). A director of commercials and television series including Sex and the City and Gossip Girl, Maclean divides her time between New York, Canada and New Zealand, and she is developing several feature films.

CREATIVE PRODUCING WITH PHILIPPA CAMPBELL
WEDNESDAY APRIL 17, 10am-12pm

Philippa Campbell will talk about the writer/producer relationship, drawing on her own extensive work to explore the producer’s role in the evolution of projects.
Philippa Campbell has produced five New Zealand feature films, including the acclaimed Rain, which premiered in competition in Cannes; Sundance audience award winner No. 2; Black Sheep, winner of three international awards; and the genre-busting Rubbings from a Live Man. Most recently she was a producer on Jane Campion’s international television mini-series Top of the Lake, starring Elisabeth Moss and Holly Hunter.
