Literary snowstorm hits Dunedin

Dunedin, 31 May 2013 - Two big literary events will have people lining up at the Dunedin City Library doors on Wednesday.

Intermediate school students keen on writing can take part in a special workshop, before members of the public are invited in to hear True Stories Told Live that evening.

Budding young Dunedin writers will take the fast lane to New Zealand’s top creative talent when they get to “speed date” a room of authors. Eighty intermediate-level children will get the benefit of years of accumulated writing experience at the first New Zealand Book Council’s Speed Date an Author event held in Dunedin.

Six of New Zealand’s top writers for children, Otago Writer in Residence Leonie Agnew, local writers Ella West, Sandy McKay and Tania Roxborogh, and Kyle Mewburn and Jeffrey Paparoa Holman will speak with small groups of the students for 20 minutes each on a key aspect of writing.

Kyle Mewburn and Jeffrey Paparoa Holman are also involved in the evening’s True Stories Told Live event, where along with Maxine Alterio, Karen Trebilcock, Vanda Symon, Peter Holland, and musician Martin Phillipps, they will be enthralling with tall tales from winters past.

Both events promise to warm frosty fingers and toes, and inspire and enthral their participants.

DCC Library Services Manager Bernie Hawke says, “Dunedin is in for a real treat as some of New Zealand’s top authors share their knowledge with young writers in the morning - while in the evening, doors will open to a gathering of master storytellers who will share their true stories.”
