2013 Sport New Zealand Sir Terry McLean National Sports Journalism Awards Winners Announced

Auckland, 29 November 2013 - New Zealand’s top sports journalists and photographers were recognised at the 2013 Sir Terry McLean National Sports Journalism Awards Dinner in Auckland last night.

The Awards, sponsored by Sport New Zealand attracted around 200 past and present media and sporting celebrities. Special guests for the evening were Sir Bob Charles and Lady Verity Charles, acknowledging 50 years since Sir Bob won The Open Golf Championship at Royal Lytham St. Annes in 1963.

The awards attracted almost 130 entries with the CBL Insurance NZSJA Supreme Sports Journalist of the Year going to New Zealand Herald senior journalist Paul Lewis.

It was a big night for Lewis who won the adidas Award for Sports Feature - Print and also collected the NZOC Award for Sports Column Opinion for his columns on the America’s Cup in San Francisco. Lewis was also made a Life Member of the Association.

The Sir John Wells Sports Journalism Scholarships, were awarded this year to Kris Shannon of APNZ and Kimberlee Downs of TVNZ. It provides two young journalists the opportunity to spend time in Wellington and Auckland with key sports leaders and organisations to gain a wider understanding of sports governance in New Zealand.

The Sport New Zealand Lifetime Contribution to Sport through Journalism Award went to Gary Ahern of Radio New Zealand, one of New Zealand’s most respected broadcasters who has covered almost all professional golf tournaments in New Zealand in the past 30 years and has been Morning Report’s Sports reporter for over 15 years.

Terry O’Neill of Oamaru was presented with the Garry Frew Memorial Trophy for Outstanding Contribution to Provincial Sports Journalism at both the Oamaru Mail and the ODT.

These were the 33rd NZSJA awards, the 19th under the patronage of Sport New Zealand, and the 13th year they have been known as the Sir Terry McLean National Sports Journalism Awards.
