Time to get hooked on seaweek!
Auckland Council is getting on board and supporting seaweek with an event at Silo Park this Sunday, the launch of a survey on the Hauraki Gulf and a social media campaign. The week runs from 1 to 9 March.
“Our ocean environment has been an important part of Auckland’s heritage and identity for generations. It supports us in countless ways, so take some time out to understand how our everyday choices may impact on our seas,” says Gael Ogilvie, manager, Auckland Council Environmental Services.
Mels Barton, national seaweek coordinator for the New Zealand Association for Environmental Education (NZAEE) says: “It’s important for Aucklanders to connect with their marine environment and seaweek provides us with a perfect opportunity to reflect on our oceans and reconnect with them.”
If you’re looking to get involved, the Seaweek Activity Hub is on Sunday 2 March from 10am – 2pm at Silo Park. The hub focuses on our marine taonga, or treasure, with fun activities such as storytelling, arts and crafts, an epic ocean education space and a penguin parade with Pippy the penguin.
The theme this year is “Our fragile, finite taonga – be alert to the fragility of the marine environment and its treasures. Kia mataara! Tiakina te au o te moana, he kōpīpī tōna“.
Aucklanders are also being asked how they use and what they treasure about the Hauraki Gulf in a survey to go live on Monday 3rd March at www.seachange.org.nz/survey
The survey has been developed and run by AUT University with the intention of feeding into the SeaChange programme – Tai Timu Tai Pari, a two year partnership project by Auckland Council, the Department of Conservation, mana whenua, Waikato Regional Council, the Hauraki Gulf Forum and the Ministry for Primary Industries to develop a new spatial plan for the Hauraki Gulf.
