Katy Perry keen for another taste of New Zealand adventure

Katy Perry keen for another taste of New Zealand adventure

29 May 2014

American pop star Katy Perry says she is keen for another taste of New Zealand adventure when the singer brings her Prismatic world tour to Auckland in December 2014.

This will be the second time the bubbly songstress has played to a New Zealand audience and the 29-year-old is looking forward to coming back.

"I’m so excited that I get to come back to New Zealand because I always have an exciting and memorable experience. I love the people, they’re great! Perry told New Zealand’s morning Breakfast show.

Katy Perry (I Kissed a Girl, Firework, Roar) is currently one of the most famous female singers in the world and a star who is not afraid to push herself to her limit in both her career and adventure choices.

AJ Hackett bungy
In-between performances of her sold-out California Dream tour in 2011, Perry enjoyed a few must-do Kiwi activities. She visited the stunning Waitomo Caves - an underground network of ancient limestone caves filled with glowing worms and black water rapids and took a leap of faith with one of her fans from Auckland’s iconic AJ Hackett Bridge Bungy jump.

When asked what the singer would like to tick off her bucket-list on her return in 2014, Perry said she would love to "take some cues from the New Zealanders" with suggestions via her twitter page.

Traditional Māori hangi
She also hinted that she would love to try a Māori hangi - a traditional way of cooking and experiencing New Zealand’s unique Māori culture. Food (kai) plays such a major role in New Zealand culture that Katy Perry will be spoilt for choice.

Traditionally, Māori cooked in a pit under the ground in ovens called ‘hangi’. In traditional hangi cooking, food such as fish and chicken, and root vegetables such as kumara (sweet potato), are cooked in a pit dug in the ground, but like all forms of cuisine, Māori food is evolving and some like to give it a modern twist.

Many New Zealand tourist activities and accommodation include a hangi meal in their Māori culture experiences. In the thermal region of Rotorua, there is also the opportunity to experience food cooked in natural thermal steam and water.

Katy Perry isn’t the only celebrity who has experienced New Zealand adventures. In 2010 teen singing sensation Justin Bieber enjoyed his AJ Hackett Bridge Bungy from the Harbour Bridge in Auckland so much, he did it twice, before tweeting "BUNGY!!! I love New Zealand!"

Football superstar David Beckham, who was visiting with American football team LA Galaxy in 2008, celebrated his sides win while enjoying the panoramic views of Auckland’s ‘City of Sails’ and plunging 40m (130ft) from the Harbour Bridge bungy.

At that time Beckham said he would look back on his visit to New Zealand at the end of his career and think "this is one of the nicest places I've been."

Stars continue to flock
A variety of international stars continue to flock to New Zealand, to perform for their fans and to experience some unique Kiwi adventures. In 2013 Taylor Swift wowed crowds at Auckland’s Vector Arena before taking a relaxing break with girlfriends on Waiheke Island - a wine-lovers paradise just a short ferry ride from downtown Auckland.

While on Waiheke Island, Swift enjoyed a barefoot run through the vines at Stonyridge Winery before soaking up the chilled atmosphere at Mudbrick Vineyard. Luckily her 44 million Instagram followers were with her every step of the way with the American singer keeping them up-to-date with her New Zealand adventure.

In October 2013 worldwide superstar Beyonce braved another iconic Auckland landmark offering spectacular views. The ‘Queen Bey’ of the music world jumped 192 metres from Auckland’s Sky Tower during her Sky Jump reportedly yelling 'this is awesome….this is so fun' on her way down.

Canadian singer Michael Bublé also recently made the leap, while Indian cricket star star Sachin Tendulka marveled at Auckland’s diverse views while doing the SkyWalk - a walk around a narrow platform around the Sky Tower, 192 metres above the city.

Royal seal of approval
In April 2014 the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge gave New Zealand their royal seal of approval after the couple, and their small son Prince George. embarked on a tour around the country.

During the Royals time in New Zealand they enjoyed racing a Team New Zealand America’s Cup yacht on Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour, some of the best Central Otago food and wine at Amisfield, thrills and spills of Queenstown’s Shotover Jet and a private tour of Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre courtesy of New Zealand director Sir Peter Jackson.

And if those adventures are not enough, Perry could always try and fit in some time with her new found-friend, Kiwi singing sensation Lorde.

I think we’re just like buds, I’ve always really liked her. I tweeted about her music a long, long time ago when it was first popping up, and I like her story, I like how she’s been trying to do this since she was like 13. I really related to her story." Perry said during her Breakfast interview.

And when asked if Lorde has asked the princess of pop for advice, Perry replied:

"No, she doesn’t need it. I should probably be asking her for advice."

Katy Perry will be bringing her Prismatic world tour to Auckland’s Vector Arena for two dates in December, 2014.
