Alice Walker: Beauty In Truth

PRESS RELEASE

30 June 2014

11.42am

The Auckland Women’s Centre presents Alice Walker: Beauty In Truth

Two Women’s Centre’s, North Shore and Auckland, are partnering to screen Alice Walker: Beauty In Truth, at The Vic Cinema, Devonport on 13 July 2014.

The documentary reflects upon the life and accomplishments of Walker, one of the most influential and controversial writers of the 20th Century. It draws on the perspectives of those who have interacted with and were influenced by her work, including activist Angela Davis and actor Danny Glover.

Walker’s upbringing, amidst the racial tension and poverty of the south in the mid-20th Century informs many pieces of her work, including her 1983 novel, The Color Purple, for which she was the first African American woman to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize.

“Walker is an influential feminist writer and activist. Her impact will be felt for years to come.” Leonie Morris, Auckland Women’s Centre manager

Most recently, Walker headlined the 2014 Auckland Writers’ Festival. Interviewed by Selina Tusitala Marsh, the discussion covered Walker’s interests in not only writing, but environmental, political and feminist topics.

The Auckland Women’s Centre works to empower women through community education and support services. Proceeds from the film screening will go towards the ongoing support of the Auckland community.

Tickets can be purchased from Auckland Women’s Centre in Grey Lynn and the Women’s Book Shop on Ponsonby road. The cost is $20.00 for a standard seat or $25.00 for a seat and a glass of wine or ice cream.
