They’re tasty, delicious, nutritious and they’re cheap!

They’re tasty, delicious, nutritious and they’re cheap!

The Heart Foundation in partnership with the New Zealand Federation of Family Budgeting Services has released a ‘Cheap Eats’ recipe book designed to deliver tasty, nutritious, $2.50 per serve, meals.

All about healthier food that’s appealing and doesn’t cost too much, Cheap Eats is an ‘updated’ second edition of the recipe book designed to reflect New Zealand’s cultural diversity. It’s about helping Kiwis to feed their families more economically without sacrificing taste, quality or nutrition. The recipe booklet also contains easy to follow and understandable cooking instructions.

Heart Foundation Manager, Food Service and Hospitality, Andrea Bidois, says Cheap Eats is a recipe book with a real point of difference – its focus is on affordable nutritious recipes.

“It took a bit of trial and error to get the balance right for the recipes to ensure they will appeal to a wide range of people and different cultures. But, the best part of the process was meeting the strict nutrition criteria.

“We based the recipes on our Heart Foundation ‘healthier choice’ guidelines and recommended levels of saturated fat, sodium, sugar and fibre per serve. We’re pleased with the results,” she said.

The New Zealand Federation of Family Budgeting Services (NZFFBS) also contributed to the development of the recipes. The Newtown Budgeting & Advocacy Service in Wellington has a skilled cook with Health Sector experience who runs cooking 101 classes for its clients and was able to provide practical input into, for example the affordability of the various recipes.

New Zealand Federation of Family Budgeting Services CEO Raewyn Fox said that they were delighted to have the opportunity to assist with the development of the ‘Cheap Eats’ recipe booklet.

“It’s really important for our clients, and all Kiwis, to know that food doesn’t have to be expensive to be delicious and nutritious. This is the driving principle behind the booklet and it fits perfectly with our budgeting philosophy. We look forward to sharing the recipes with our clients,” she said.

Cheap Eats is available through branches of the Family Budgeting Services and the Heart Foundation. It can also be downloaded from the Heart Foundation website at http://www.heartfoundation.org.nz/uploads/CheapEats_cookbook_Web.pdf
