Air New Zealand target of ‘Flighting Sexism’ Art Exhibition

Air New Zealand may have pulled its infamous safety video that used bikini clad models to croon inflight safety instructions, but it is still the impetus for an exhibition protesting against sexism.

Craftivist Emanarchy of the Wellington Craftivism Collective, along with members of a feminist mothers group and queer groups, have gathered an eclectic mix of visual works including decorated inflight eye masks, cross stitch, quilts and paintings.

“We began with a Facebook group ‘Ban AirNZ’s Sexist Safety Video’ and blog, then petitions on Change.org took off with over 10,000 signatures received from women and men around the world.” Said Emanarchy the exhibition’s organizer.

The Flighting Sexism Exhibition opens tonight at 6pm, 19 Tory Street, Wellington and will run for a week. The opening event features performances or work by Emanarchy, poet Marewa Glover, Ron Tekawa, Molly Rangiwai McHale, Choir boy, Charlotte Sirvid, Octavia Palmer, Lexi Goodman, Amps, Sanik, Zarah Watson and others.
