Solo 2014: Five Wellington Artists

Solo 2014: Five Wellington Artists

Nine metres of hydrangeas in oil paint, a translucent pyramid, colourful collage, experimental jewellery and captivating performance work are some of the treats that The Dowse Art Museum has to offer as part of biennial exhibition Solo 2014. Running from 18 October to 22 February 2015, Solo 2014 will showcase newly-commissioned works by five established and up-and-coming local artists - Karl Maughan, Peter Trevelyan, Samin Son, Ruth Thomas-Edmond and Moniek Schrijer.

Wellington born and based painter Karl Maughan is renowned for his luminous, hyper-real garden scenes. He graduated with a Master of Fine Arts from Elam School of Fine Arts in 1987 and launched his career in London. He now works from his studio in Mount Victoria. For Solo, five towering canvases nine metres in length will sit side-by-side on a wall of The Dowse, transforming the space into a dramatic garden scene. This work is drawn directly from the hydrangeas at Wellington's own Botanical Gardens.

Drawing upon the laws of geometry, Peter Trevelyan lifts paper technical plans into three-dimensional space using unconventional materials such as pencil leads. For Solo 2014, Trevelyan will build a giant translucent pyramid with a new drawing tool. He graduated in 2000 with a BFA from Ilam School of Fine Arts in Canterbury, going on to complete a masters and PhD at Massey's Fine Arts school in Wellington. Trevelyan has exhibited his widely in spaces such as City Gallery Wellington, Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu and the Blue Oyster Gallery in Dunedin.

Samin Son is a Korean-born performance artist raised in New Zealand. He graduated with a Fine Arts degree from Massey University. His work has been strongly influenced by two years of compulsory military service in South Korea. For Solo 2014 Samin has created a deeply personal performance work based on a 1930s song from the Japanese occupation era of Korea taught to him by his grandfather. Through this performance, Son will relate the song to his own experiences of growing up in New Zealand and his military service in Korea.

For Solo 2014, Ruth Thomas-Edmond will create a large-scale, collage made from multi coloured masking tape applied directly to the walls of the gallery; which will be left behind for visitors like evidence of her movements and time spent developing the work. After extensive testing of materials and forms, her site specific works are made intuitively, a process representing hundreds of small decisions. Thomas-Edmond completed her masters in Fine Art at Elam School of Fine Arts in 2005.

Moniek Schrijer pushes traditional jewellery boundaries, using industrial materials such as concrete, wood and glass to challenge accepted notions of jewellery and its value. For Solo 2014, Schrijer will create a sculptural and evocative jewellery installation that references the four classical elements (fire, water, air, earth) She completed a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Post-Graduate Diploma in Jewellery and Printmaking at Whitireia New Zealand Faculty of Art in 2012 and her work has been shown as far afield as Munich, Germany.
