Fiji, Honduras and Uzbekistan teams arrive in Christchurch ahead of the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2015

Christchurch City Council welcomed the Fiji, Honduras and Uzbekistan teams to Christchurch today ahead of the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2015.

Officials and fans gathered at Christchurch International Airport to show support for the teams ahead of the opening matches on Monday 1 June at Christchurch Stadium, Addington.

Councillor Yani Johanson, official Council representative for the FIFA U-20 World Cup New Zealand 2015, says, “Welcoming Uzbekistan, Fiji and Honduras today was a special occasion as it shows how global this tournament is.

"I'm sure the three teams are coming to New Zealand to do their countries proud and hopefully make it through the group stages of the tournament.

"All the teams were greeted with a fantastic welcome and we want to make them feel at home throughout their stay here in Christchurch.

"Germany arrived yesterday so all our teams are here now and it's not long to go before we see these upcoming stars in action,” Councillor Johanson says.

The FIFA U-20 World Cup 2015 opening matches will see Germany take on Fiji at 1pm before Uzbekistan plays Honduras at 4pm.
