New Zealand Burlesque Festival kicks off

The big reveal is here: New Zealand Burlesque Festival kicks off

The queens and kings of international burlesque are in town to delight audiences, and teach the art of shimmy and tease, at the New Zealand Burlesque Festival.

Palmerston North’s most scintillating event is back for a third year, featuring the world’s top performers, including Las Vegas-based Burlesque Hall of Fame winners Ginger Lee Valentine, Missy Lisa, Angie B. Lovely and Bazuka Joe.

They’ll be joined by New Zealand’s own star of the stage, Ruby Ruin, Grand Tease New Zealand winner Fanciforia Foxglove and more than two dozen local performers.

This year’s festival is bigger, better and more enticing than ever, with three days of workshops in Palmerston North, teaching the secrets of burlesque stardom to curious newcomers and experienced performers alike.

For those who prefer just to watch, three star-studded performances will take place in Palmerston North from October 8-10, before an added tour takes the glitz and glamour to Dunedin (October 16) and Christchurch (October 17) for the first time.

The Burlesque Exchange Scholarship will be awarded to one outstanding New Zealand performer, giving them automatic entry into the Show Me Burlesque Festival 2016 in St Louis, USA, plus assistance with travel costs, and help to establish their own US-based tour.

New Zealand Burlesque Festival co-producer Kerry Rodda, renowned internationally for her performances under the stage name MisRed Delicious, established the festival with husband Danny Rascal, to foster and grow the burlesque industry in New Zealand.

"We're thrilled to have these top-shelf performers take it off down under - and our ticket sales show audiences are just as excited as we are!" Rodda says.

"The burlesque scene in New Zealand has grown so much since our first festival, and we're proud to support local performers to pursue their passion on the world stage."
