Unitec student film up for international award

A New Zealand short film about a young mother who must come to terms with the consequences of a difficult decision is up for Best International short film at the prestigious Asian Micro Film Festival. The festival will be held from 6 – 10 November at Lincang, Yunnan Province, China and is run by the China TV Artistes Association with CCTV (Chinese state broadcaster).

Directed by Paloma Schneideman, with acting student Moana Johnson in the lead role, Mine was made as their graduation project from Unitec’s Department of Performing and Screen Arts (PASA) in 2014. The film has already been selected to screen at this year’s Wairoa Maori Film Festival and New Zealand International Film Festival.

The film’s writer, Emilia Robinson was also nominated for Best Short Film Script at the 2015 New Zealand Writer’s Guild Awards (SWANZ) earlier this month. “This nomination was a significant achievement for such a recently graduated screenwriter,” explains Unitec scriptwriting tutor Caroline Grose.

“The film was chosen for its aesthetics, story-telling and collaborative team work,” says Auckland producer, Alex Lee, who is also Unitec PASA’s head of department. “I would like to congratulate the entire cast and crew as well as the teaching team for their collaborative work that made this film stand out.”
