Waitangi Day Festival '16: Celebrating the Treaty & Auckland

Waitangi Day Festival 2016: a Celebration of the Treaty And Auckland

Ngati Whatua Orakei is proud to host Waitangi Day Festival 2016 on Saturday, February 6 at Takaparawhau (Bastion Point).

The annual festival commemorating the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi is also an opportunity to celebrate the historical origins of Tamaki Makaurau (Auckland), and bring together people from all cultures and communities.

Ngati Whatua Orakei’s ‘Waitangi Day Festival 2016’ is a free event and open to all. The festival has proved a popular day out for Aucklanders and visitors, with previous events attracting over 20,000 people.

A key focus for ‘Waitangi Day Festival 2016’ is to honour the principles of the Treaty - partnership, protection and participation. There will be entertainment for all ages, including kite-flying, childrens’ rides, cultural displays and food stalls.

Music will also play a key role, with a range of performers on stage throughout the day. This year’s Main Stage will feature New Zealand reggae favourites House of Shem, alongside 1814, Billy TK Jnr, Majic, Riqi Harawira and Auckland hip-hop group, ill Semantics.

Local acts will also have an opportunity to perform at the ‘Waitangi Day Festival 2016’, with a newly-introduced whanau stage to encourage community participation at the event.

In conjunction with the Para Kore programme, which focuses on the reduction and awareness of waste, ‘Waitangi Day Festival 2016’ is aiming to achieve zero waste. In 2015, with the help of volunteers, the event succeeded in diverting 85% of waste away from landfills. This is done by focusing on separating waste from biodegradable products and recycling.
