“We both feel strongly about this cause and it’s a real privilege to be able to help out,” Bond said.

Daffodil Racedays is an initiative of the New Zealand Racing Board (NZRB) in partnership with New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) and the Cancer Society NZ.

Over the month of August, NZRB is hosting a series of ‘High Tea’ events for Cancer Society volunteers at Saturday thoroughbred meetings at Christchurch (Riccarton), Hamilton (Te Rapa) and Auckland (Ellerslie), culminating with a full day of fundraising at the Makfi Challenge Stakes Daffodil Raceday in Hawkes Bay on Saturday 27 August.

“Cancer Society volunteers are the people who work day in, day out, 365 days a year - to support those touched by cancer. These events are our way of saying thank you for their dedication, hard work and commitment,” says NZRB CEO John Allen.

Cancer Society volunteers provide driving, respite sitting and fundraising services for people with cancer, their friends, families and carers.

Cancer Society NZ CEO Claire Austin says it’s wonderful that NZRB and NZTR are supporting such a valuable cause.

“The Society’s volunteers are extremely selfless so the high tea events are a great way to thank them,

“We’ve been running Daffodil Day for 26 years, our principal sponsor ANZ have been with us from the start, and it is wonderful that we also have NZRB and NZTR to help us raise vital funds for cancer research and to support those with cancer.”

NZRB will also make a cash donation to the Cancer Society, and NZTR, Hawkes Bay Racing, Westbury Stud, as well as numerous trainers, jockeys and owners have thrown their weight behind contributing to this incredible cause.

“I’m very proud of this initiative - it highlights the generosity of our people and the contribution racing makes to New Zealand communities,” says Allen.
