The Auckland Fringe is back in 2017! And Basement Theatre are welcoming an eclectic bunch of international and local talents to illuminate the stage with radical, exuberant and challenging art – in the spirit of Fringe festivals across the world. From 15 February–12 March 2017 the Basement Theatre’s mainstage and studio will be crammed with shows, with select satellite performances taking punters out into the city as well.

Auckland Fringe offers creatives a space to experiment, present work outside the norm and blur boundaries between genres. Established artists revel in the chance to produce off-beat new work, whilst emerging talents are able to present in an open-minded and unrestricted environment.

To open the festival from 15 February - 11 March, Silo Theatre presents the subversive and darkly comic manifesto Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again. Dynamic performers Fasitua Amosa, Sophie Henderson, Amanda Tito and Michelle Ny are led by director Virginia Frankovich to take on this fearless and wild piece by feminist UK playwright Alice Birch.

Riding high on the success of Edinburgh Fringe and a handful of Australian Festivals We May Have to Choose is making its NZ debut at the Basement Theatre. Winner of three 2015 Melbourne Fringe Awards and the Adelaide Fringe Best Theatre - Weekly Award, We May Have to Choose stars Emma Hall who performs this poetic study of the personal soapbox; 621 opinions in 45 minutes with exceptional finesse. The second international performer, Eliza Sanders of Australia, has made her mark with daring cross-artform works that have garnered critical acclaim and scooped up various fringe awards. From the silly to the sublime, her two shows Castles and Pedal will take the audience on absurd and mercurial journeys.

The third week features a line-up of strong female artists taking to the floor. Julia Croft, who’s last solo show If There’s Not Dancing at the Revolution, I’m Not Coming blew audiences away, will perform her fresh new feminist work Power Ballad. Whilst Alexa Wilson, a winner of The Listener’s Best Emerging NZ Choreographer, will bring 21 Movements to the stage in a performative response to some of the defining events of the 21st Century.

The upstairs studio venue will be transformed into Performance Salon -think Moulin Rouge at the beach -where works of all kinds will pop up around audiences. Wander in and out over four hours each night with music, projection, and activities filling the gaps between performances from a bevy of leading Fringe artists including Alice Canton, Kate Bartlett, Tallulah Holly-Massey, Virginia Frankovich, Brad Gledhill, Nathan Joe, Thomas Press, Tom Sainsbury and Angella Dravid. The two satellite performances in the programme will take participants out of the theatre and into New World in Enter the New World, or through Auckland’s CBD in Delivery #17.
