A colourful overview of regional diversity

Record immigration and tourism numbers mean that not only school kids need to gain an appreciation of New Zealand’s regional diversity. The newly released Regions of New Zealand answers that need in an easily digested, colourful hardback that gives readers all they need to know about the main diverse geography and characteristics of the nation.

Through maps, photos, fact boxes and simple text, the book takes readers on a tour from Northland to Southland, Tokelau to Antarctica. Each region features in a spread of the book, with a colour map showing towns and features, summary text, photos illustrating key locations and tourist destinations, fact boxes and key info.

In addition are sections on Māori regional relationships, early provincial divisions, outlying territories and study links.

“Regions are what give New Zealand its special character, and we hope this book will increase appreciation of what they have to offer,” comments author Peter Dowling.

Dowling, the publisher of Oratia Books, was the revising editor of Māori Place Names (Oratia) last year and of Place Names of New Zealand (Penguin) in 2010. He has authored and edited numerous books and articles, and has a keen interest in history, travel and maps. Canterbury is his home region and Auckland his adopted one.
