Celebrate ‘A Soprani Christmas’ in Wellington on 1 December

‘A Soprani Christmas’ - Celebrating Classical & loved Christmas songs with a touch of jazz.

The exciting new vocal duo ‘Soprani’ are making their NZ debut at St. Andrews on the Terrace, Wellington, on Friday, 1 December.

Paloma Bruce and Ruth Armishaw bring you ‘A Soprani Christmas’, a special event to welcome the festive season featuring classical, Christmas and jazz favourites.

Opera singer Paloma Bruce and Jazz singer Ruth Armishaw have joined forces to form ‘Soprani,’ a duo that merges the musical worlds of jazz and classical.

Paloma first became a young singer to watch when she performed on McDonald’s Young Entertainers at 15 years old. In the same year, she performed in her first opera ‘Carmen’ with Wellington City Opera. She then went on to graduate from Victoria University with first class honours after performing the lead role in their opera in the Wellington Opera House.

She was an Emerging Artist for NZ Opera, and has performed as a soloist in concert with Dame Malvina Major and Sir Howard Morrison. She was a winner of the Napier and Wellington aria contests, a runner-up in the New Zealand Aria competition, and a semi-finalist in the Lexus Song Quest.

While Paloma worked as a freelance opera singer in the UK, Ruth established herself as Wellington’s most well-known jazz singer, regularly performing in the Wellington Jazz Festival. A chameleon of the Wellington music scene, you could easily see her singing and playing jazz in a restaurant on Thursday, singing Brazilian Samba in a bar on Friday, on stage at the Saint James in an opera on Saturday, and singing as a soloist for a choral oratorio concert Sunday afternoon. As a Mezzo-Soprano, Ruth has been performing with the Chorus of NZ Opera since 2002. Ruth is an experienced choral singer having performed in the Wellington Youth Choir, NZ Youth Choir, and Orpheus Choir of Wellington and is now a member of New Zealand’s newest professional vocal ensemble ‘Inspirare’.

Apart from performing, something else Soprani share is the love for teaching their craft.

While studying and working in the UK, Paloma realised her passion for teaching. She now focuses on helping experienced singers and beginners to learn to sing with good technique.

While Paloma mainly teaches adults, Ruth teaches children at schools including Rata Studios and Musical Stars. Her young singers from across Wellington will be forming a children’s choir especially for this concert.

With festive favourites and guest appearances from these up-and-coming performers, ‘A Soprani Christmas’ is sure to be a highlight on your seasonal calendar.
