Maajid Nawaz, Ali Rizvi & Yasmine Mohammed in NZ this March

Maajid Nawaz, Ali Rizvi & Yasmine Mohammed
Appearing in New Zealand This March

Friday 9th March | New Zealand Festival, Michael Fowler Centre, Wellington
Saturday 10th March | AUT City Campus, Auckland

This March, Think Inc. in association with the New Zealand Festival and AUT, is thrilled to bring audiences a triumvirate of voices in the conversation on political extremism and Islam: Maajid Nawaz, Ali Rizvi and Yasmine Mohammed, for what will no doubt be 2018’s most Dangerous Dialogue.

In this era of intolerance and misinformation, it has never been more crucial to tow the discourse on Islam back into the realm of intellectual honesty and rationality.

As commentary on Islam by non-Muslim voices gets devalued or de-platformed altogether on the premise of a speaker’s lack of lived experience, enter Maajid, Ali, and Yasmine, who not only have lived experiences as Muslims, but also view politicised Islam with a critical eye.

As a former member of Islamist organisation Hizb ut-Tahrir, Maajid Nawaz is a living testament of moving from radicalism to rationality, going on to found the counter-extremism think tank Quilliam and spearheading a movement to make questionable tenets of Islam more compatible with liberal democratic values. Nawaz is also famous for his feud-turned-friendship with prominent atheist Sam Harris, which came as a result of a candid conversation transcribed into their book Islam and the Future of Tolerance (2015).

Ali Rizvi, author of The Atheist Muslim: a Journey from Religion to Reason (2016), has been at the forefront of challenging how both political sides discuss Islam. Whilst no longer a Muslim, Rizvi is dedicated to ensuring that society matures to criticise political ideas without criticising the individuals that subscribe to them.

Yasmine Mohammed (Confessions of an Ex-Muslim) is an activist and writer with a unique (yet not uncommon) story of religiously-justified abuse, being forced into marriage with a member of Al-Qaeda, and facing the dangerous consequences of leaving her faith and family. Yasmine hosts the Secular Jihadists podcast along with Ali Rizvi, Faisal Saeed al-Mutar, and Armin Navabi.

Maajid, Ali and Yasmine are all featured speakers in Think Inc.’s upcoming crowdfunded documentary entitled Islam and the Future of Tolerance, inspired by the crucial and courageous conversation between Maajid Nawaz and Sam Harris.

This March, join Think Inc., Maajid Nawaz, Ali Rizvi, and Yasmine Mohammed as they disarm a dangerous dialogue and clear a path for talking about political extremism with respect, rationality and intellectual honesty - because when rational voices are turned down, the irrational are amplified.
