Auckland Live Gets a Fresh Dose of Fringe!

The spirit of Fringe is about to land and Auckland Live is ready to join the party once again with a mixed bag of offbeat theatrical treats to get Aucklander’s experimental juices flowing. Give your imagination a boost with a programme that includes Shakespearian street theatre, watching paint dry (live!), and actors who literally live on the fringe. It’s all part of the madness that is Auckland Fringe Festival, 20 February – 4 March.

The Fringey goodness kicks off with the Bard earning some serious street cred with University of Auckland’s Stray Theatre Company’s version of Shakespeare’s rom com - Two Gentlemen of Verona. This is unbelievable street theatre, right in the heart of Aotea Square from 27 Feb – 4 March. Directed by the clever Alex Bonham, see nine talented women (and one dog) perform Shakespeare’s first play. No tickets, just turn up and dig deep for koha.

Second up, unconventional performers from Hobson Street Theatre Company unapologetically tackle issues facing marginalised Aucklanders with The Race, playing at Herald Theatre 28 Feb – 3 March. Armed with raw honesty and dark humour this show explores how racism affects those experiencing homelessness in Aotearoa. An initiative run by Auckland City Mission, the theatre company has been together since 2010, and has presented seven shows across Auckland that deliver a radical performance experience. The Race presents a cast that have all used the Mission’s services; some of the members of the group have, or currently are, experiencing homelessness.

And finally, The Rebel Alliance (Manifesto 2083, Standstill) brings you Watching Paint Dry by award winning playwright Anders Falstie-Jensen. You'd be surprised how much is happening when nothing is happening at all. With their phones turned on (and on loud) audiences are invited to watch performer and lighting designer, Sean Lynch, watch paint dry (live!).
Get ready for time moving in ways you never thought it could. Watching Paint Dry is on at Herald Theatre, 28 Feb – 3 March.

But wait there’s more... in addition to the theatre programme, there’s a FREE digital art live event. Liminal: Motion as Manifest is a free interactive visual spectacular at Bruce Mason Centre, 20 – 26 Feb, created by spatial designer and creative technologist Joshua Lewis. This innovative work combines a short film of sculpturally manifested movement, providing a visual feast for Fringe audiences.
