Police geared up to march with pride at parade
The New Zealand Police will once again be out in force as they show their support for the LGBTIQ+ community at this year’s Auckland Pride Parade on February 17th.
A strong contingent of off-duty staff, including sworn and non-sworn police employees, will be marching with pride at the Ponsonby Rd festival as they show respect for diversity in our communities.
Police Commissioner Mike Bush, along with members of the police executive, will be taking part in the police march and says the Pride Parade is a great opportunity for Police to show their support for all communities served, inclusive of all genders, ethnicities and sexual orientations.
“I am marching in the Parade for the first time on Saturday and I’m looking forward to celebrating with our LGBTIQ+ community,” says Mr Bush.
“Diversity is one of our core values in the NZ Police and we support and celebrate employees from all backgrounds of life in our organisation.
“NZ Police is on a major recruitment drive at present and it’s important that we reflect the communities that we serve.
I encourage and welcome anyone interested in joining the NZ Police, irrespective of gender, ethnicity or sexuality.”
The theme for this year’s parade is Rainbow Warriors: Pride and Peace, and this year the NZ Police is proud to be featuring a unique rainbow-designed police car in the parade, which was created specifically for the Auckland Pride Festival.
“We hope our one-of-a-kind police pride car will be a hit with parade attendees, it is designed to highlight the NZ Police’s commitment to the value of diversity and acknowledges the important relationship the Police now has with the LGBTIQ+ community in Aotearoa,” says Mr Bush.
The police march will also feature our dog section, horses, police cars and motorcycles.
The NZ Police currently has 68 trained Diversity Liaison Officers (DLO’s) around the country who are specific LGBTIQ+ friendly staff.
They are a safe point of contact for members of the LGBTIQ+ community and provide an assurance that their concerns and issues will be taken seriously.
