More than 1000 Junior Tag footballers play in Inaugural NZTFI Tag Football - Junior Oceania Tournament 9-11 March 2018

More than 1000 children have enjoyed their second day of the inaugural NZTFI Junior Oceania Tag Football Tournament at Ngati Otara Park in Auckland.

The 3-day competition from 9-11 March attracted players from under-8s to under-18’s across 90 teams representing their island nations, Cook Islands, Fiji, Niue, Samoa, Tonga, Tokelau, NZ Invitation and Queensland Pacific.

The event kicked off on Friday morning under blue skies with a march past, flag raising and a karakia to bless the occasion. Day 2 - Saturday was again under beautiful blue skies with children and families enjoying the games on a great day. Day 3 is finals day.

The competition recognises the growing popularity of Tag Football amongst the Pacific communities and celebrates the 10th official year under NZ Tag Football Incorporated.

The Oceania Junior Tournament is the second major children’s event organised by NZTFI.

Earlier this year, more than 1000 children turned out for the first NZTFI’s Junior Nationals at Ngati Otara Park. Each player was rewarded with inaugural junior player medals.

NZTFI held its Nationals at Fraser Park, Lower Hutt Wellington two weeks ago. Holding Nationals outside of Auckland for the first time was a great opportunity for local Wellington teams to play in their own backyard with great support from the local council who supplied fields, water tank and other facilities.

It was a success and also the chance to promote Tag Football to other parts of New Zealand.

It’s the sport for all ages, young and old, of all shapes and sizes.
