Rako Pasefika Make Debut in Aoteroa

Having recently performed at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, Rako Pasefika are set to make their debut in New Zealand tonight.

A globe-trotting Rotuman dance company based in Fiji that has wowed audiences with their particular blend of contemporary and heritage dance, Rako Pasefika will be performing in Aotearoa for the first time to bring the 2018 Pacific Dance Festival to a close. Having brought over a contingent of 7 dancers to make their debut in Auckland, they will be performing on Friday 22 and Saturday 23 June, 8pm at the Mangere Arts Centre.

Rako Pasefika will be presenting their work Cloaks of Protection, best explained by Artistic Director Letila Mitchell:

"The focus of the show is talking about the imbalance in the world and basically how this imbalance has caused violence in our communities. This show is a conversation about violence and how this imbalance has created that.

Our dance style is rooted in our tradition but our expression is contemporary. Throughout the show what we are showing is both masculine and feminine and both sides are really beautiful but with imbalance that's when we see all the troubles in our communities.

We're advocating unity and acceptance of diversity. A lot of the ways we treat each other is also a reflection of how we treat Mother Earth. If we're rooted in our culture with unity we'll all have a better world."
