Puanga ki Matariki: Nga mihi mō te tau hou Māori
The theme of Learning with Aroha will inspire Te Wānanga o Aotearoa as we celebrate the Māori New Year with Auckland Council, as principal partner of Matariki Festival.
Following on from the ceremonial handover of the iwi manaaki mauri from Ngāti Manuhiri to Te Kawerau a Maki, Te Wānanga o Aotearoa is looking forward to tomorrow’s official dawn opening ceremony and is proud to once again be part of this year’s winter festivities.
Hoe Whakatere Bernard Te Paa says as we launch our latest Brand Campaign “Learning with Aroha,” it’s no secret - there’s something quite special about Wānanga.
“While it’s true, in this burgeoning space of learning Te Reo me ona tikanga, we think our point of difference is aroha and it’s all the more reason why we believe this festival is important.
“We want to support the interest out there by sharing our culture with more people in Auckland and across the motu and watch it thrive.
“In this respect I’d like acknowledge Auckland Council for strengthening its commitment to mana whenua and kaupapa Māori.
“The foundations of our culture set in aroha and manaakitanga are values Te Wānanga o Aotearoa projects out on a national scale but it’s great to see it happening at a local level through this festival and we’re delighted to have our voice out there, a whanau voice, as part of our partnership.
“Matariki is an opportune time to renew our outlook and aspirations. As our own relationship with Auckland Council continues to mature long may we continue in celebration to share in new learnings and understandings.
“While we look to the stars this year, we are excited to showcase our own future stars.
“Our performing arts tauira are once again included in the line-up of entertainment happening in Māngere and Glen Innes as part of the 'Matariki on the Move' Ngahau events. A premier example of tauira success!
“As the country’s largest indigenous provider passionate about transforming whānau through education we are proud to be working alongside Auckland Council to serve and support the communities of Tāmaki Makaurau.
“I congratulate Auckland Council for the work it does bringing our communities together through the large number of events relating to Matariki taking place across the city in July.
