Round the Bays calls for charity partners
Auckland Round the Bays calls for charity partners for
share of $60,000
Today, Ports of Auckland Round the Bays has opened up applications to find three charity partners for its March 2019 event.
Registered New Zealand charities who wish to apply have the chance to a share of $60,000 in cash donations, plus receive a $20,000 Stuff media package each and a charity package valued at $2,500, including a hospitality site and event tickets. The three selected charities will also headline in event promotion, encouraging more public fundraising for their causes.
Last year, the event generated more than $160,000 combined for more than 30 NZ charities, and this year hopes to raise even more.
From Tuesday, 14 August, NZ Charities can apply for funding by heading to roundthebays.co.nz/charities and filling out the online form. Applications close midnight Friday 31 August and selected charities will be announced on 5 September.
Three very deserving charities from last year, Lifeline, South Auckland Riding for the Disabled and Spirit of Adventure Trust were able to make a real difference with their donations from the 2018 event.
Lifeline
• Lifeline is a 24/7 helpline for Kiwis in
crises
• Lifeline received a $15,000 donation and an
additional $12,400 from fundraisers
• The funds enabled
the charity to listen to 1,080 callers in distress and
crisis
• Lifeline relies on donations to be able to
respond to approximately 10,000 callers every
month.
South Auckland Riding for the
Disabled
• Through specialised horse therapy programmes, RDA helps
Kiwis who live with physical, intellectual, emotional and
social challenges to develop their independence, confidence
and abilities
• South Auckland Riding for the Disabled
received $15,000 and $428 from fundraisers
• “Our aim
with this money was to buy one, or even two new ponies
suitable for use as RDA ponies. Finding an RDA pony is no
easy task - they have to be a certain size, unflappable,
friendly, easy going and have a good spring in their step.
They also have to have loads of experience and know how to
behave while being ridden - all of this is extremely
difficult to attribute to one horse!” says Alison Daldy,
Committee Member RDA South Auckland
• “Luckily for
us, we found a fabulous pony called Rocky soon after we
received our funds. Rocky ticked all the boxes and came to
join us in March, shortly after Round the Bays. He has been
an amazing boy - very little training was required and he
had disabled children riding him within 2 weeks! We
absolutely love our Rocky and feel very lucky to have
him.”
• “Since then, we have been searching
desperately for a second pony as we lost one of our older
ponies in June (this is a very sad part of what we do, but,
sadly, it does happen). Two weeks ago, we went and looked at
a potential pony and we have decided to buy him! He is
gorgeous and once again, ticks all the boxes. He is enjoying
living with our other ponies and seems to be fitting in
beautifully. He will need very little training and will be a
very usable, versatile pony. His name is Arnie and we are
very happy with him.”
• "Of course, looking after
horses (we now have 7) is very expensive as there are many
things to consider. Each horse needs five-weekly farrier
visits to look after their feet, yearly dentist
appointments, vet visits when necessary and food and hay. On
average, this works out to around $1000 - $2000 per year per
pony.”
• “Our team of ponies is looking good now
and we are so grateful that we have been able to add to the
team. Thank you so much to Round the Bays and all the
wonderful people who have supported us.”
Spirit of
Adventure Trust
• Spirit of Adventure Trust is an
organisation dedicated to the development of youth;
empowering young Kiwis to reach their full potential through
the challenge of the sea.
• 100 enthusiastic past and
present trainees and crews were involved in Ports of
Auckland Round the Bays 2018
• Spirit of Adventure
Trust received $20,000 and $610 from
fundraisers
• “This generous donation created
life-changing experiences - 277 young New Zealanders have
become more confident and competent contributors to their
whānau and within their community. Each Trainee has
completed the 10Youth Development program with greater
resilience to support them and help them face life’s
challenges ahead.” says Talei Williams, Marketing
Communications Spirit of Adventure Trust.
• “Spirit
of Adventure has played a huge part in our student’s lives
at Pacific Advanced Senior School (PASS). All our students
who come back from a voyage say it was nothing less than a
life-changing experience. We participated in this year’s
Round the Bays event and it was good to stand next to our
Spirit of Adventure Trust family and give back to the
community. We are now ready to beat our time next year!”
